“Peculiar” refers to something that is strange or unusual while “benefit” is absolutely an advantage that people desire to have. She surprised me by using some strange words such as “peculiar benefits,” “immunity,” “Game of Privilege.” The interesting title “peculiar benefits” really catches readers’ attention because of the somehow contrasting connotations between the two words. I find this essay somehow interesting to read because of Roxane Gay’s word choice. On the other hand, she is also aware of her benefits, and she provides some good reasons for people to acknowledge their own privilege. On one hand, she has difficulty accepting her privilege, so she understand why some people may refuse it. By discussing both advantages and disadvantages, Roxane Gay can show her impartiality. One important thing about her credential is that she acknowledges her privilege, but she thinks it is “embarrassing” and “difficult … to accept.” She does not just show off her benefits, but she also mentions some “pain” in her life. She is “a person of color ” she “grew up middle class and then upper middle class.” From her description, it can be seen that her life is somehow easy and bright as she is brought up in a happy family, has a good education, and gets a stable job. In “Peculiar Benefits,” she also talks a little bit about her background and privilege. Now, she is a professor and a writer for feminist and racism. She got a doctoral degree in rhetoric and technical communication at Michigan Technological University.

The significant difference between people’s poverty in her fatherland and her family’s easy life in the United States makes Gay acknowledge her privilege. The author begins with a personal story about her trip to Haiti. “Peculiar Benefits” by Roxane Gay argues about people’ acknowledgement of privilege. In my opinion, this writing is persuasive thanks to the author’s ethos, excellent diction, good supporting evidence, and logical organization. Roxane Gay’s purpose here is to argue that people should acknowledge and be proud of their privilege instead of trying to degrade themselves or make any accusation of it. I believe the intended ones are those who possess some certain privilege but do not appreciate it. I chose to write about the essay “Peculiar Benefits” by Roxane Gay because I was impressed by and curious about its title.
